Snow Patrol chief Gary Lightbody was given the liberty of the Ards and North Down counties in an official consecration ceremony at Bangor Castle.
His donation comes ahead of an acoustic concert by the band on Wednesday in the city of Co Down, held to celebrate the award.
Lightbody, described as Bangor’s most famous son’s city, officially received the title after signing the Book of Burgesses with mayor Karen Douglas and council executive Stephen Reid.

Ms Douglas, said: “The decision to give Gary Lightbody the freedom of the district was made in October 2019 but the pandemic and Gary’s busy touring schedule have prevented us from presenting it until now. .

“An event that testifies to Gary’s love of his hometown, his outstanding musical talent, and his commitment to championing new artists.
“He is a role model in the music industry and an ambassador for Northern Ireland, so he is well-suited to receive the highest honor that Ards and North Down Borough Council can bestow. “
County freedom is an ancient prerogative dating back to the 1600s.
Lightbody was instrumental in the creation of the Oh Yeah Music Center in 2007, a social enterprise and charity in Belfast, established as a resource for music producers and supporting the music business in Northern Ireland.
He was the first recipient of an award for outstanding contributions to music at the 2018 Northern Ireland Music Awards and has since spoken of his appreciation for his ability to contribute to the local music scene. direction.
The launch of the Lightbody Foundation in 2019, in partnership with the Community Fund for Northern Ireland, has provided funding and helped support many community groups and volunteers.
