Health chiefs are hoping to have a new €90m extension to University Hospital Limerick (UHL), one of Ireland’s most overcrowded hospitals, ready by 2024.
Construction of the new 96-bed block is expected to begin in October, with the strategic expansion being ready for commissioning within two years.
It comes as Taoiseach Micheál Martin insisted he also wanted to see progress on Cork’s proposed new Choice Hospital.
“I just think that Election Hospital (Cork) is extremely important and I am very determined and the Government is that we deliver really on time and we have made that clear at Government level,” Mr Martin said.
“It has to go through certain processes for government spending and so on, but it’s extremely important and together with Galway and then Limerick could be a great example of really improving the efficiency of health in the future. “
A key objective of the Cork Elective Hospital Project is to ease the pressure on Cork University Hospital (CUH).
The Limerick project will cost €90m, with Health Secretary Stephen Donnelly confirming that an allocation of €4.5m has already been included in this year’s capital budget.
Prime contractor Sisk hopes to start construction within six weeks, and the project is expected to be complete by early fall 2024.
Once complete, the new block is expected to drastically ease the pressure on the Midwestern hospital.
It will have 96 beds in a four-story high-tech block.
The facility will serve as an inpatient extension near the existing emergency room and kidney treatment center.
While UHL has benefited from a new emergency department, the hospital has consistently topped the list of overcrowding for the past five years.
Along with Cork University Hospital (CUH), it has consistently topped the Trolley Watch numbers compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO).
Limerick politicians have called for an increase in bed capacity at UHL after warning that overcrowding is entirely linked to a shortage of inpatient beds at the facility.
Two years ago, UHL received a new extension with 60 beds.
The new expansion aims to significantly reduce the hospital’s overcrowding.
