Health Insurance Ireland: Patients hitting high bills after being told too late their health insurer didn’t cover it – Ombudsman

Consumers who have health insurance have been warned to ensure they don’t get left out on the bag when having costly medical procedures.

People find out too late that their health insurance doesn’t cover them.

The Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman’s office said it handles a large number of cases where people have health insurance but only find out after the procedure that their insurer will not cover them.

Because some pre-existing conditions are often not covered by health insurance. These are medical issues that existed prior to the purchase of coverage or prior to the upgrade of coverage.

However, Acting Ombudsman MaryRose McGovern said some people with health insurance may not be aware they have a pre-existing condition.

She said a number of complaints to her office show people may have had medical evaluations or blood tests or X-rays.

These may have revealed a pre-existing condition, but as it was never given a name at the time, they didn’t know they had it.

Ms McGovern said: “It is important for consumers to be aware that a pre-existing condition can exist without a formal diagnosis and it is the signs and symptoms within the period that are relevant.”

Individuals with a pre-existing medical condition may have to wait up to two years before their condition is covered by their policy or when they upgrade their coverage.

The Ombudsman said some consumers who buy health insurance are unfamiliar with their coverage or don’t understand how waiting times can affect their ability to make a claim on their policy.

Ms McGovern said: “As with all financial products, it’s so important to understand what you’re buying and to be aware that not all insurance policies are created equal.”

Consumers have been warned that the amount of health and ambulatory insurance coverage depends on the type of plan they choose.

Market research conducted by her office found that a third of respondents who have health insurance felt they did not know their plan’s coverage well.

In contrast, the poll found that only 15 percent of respondents felt they had a very good understanding.
