Heart attack cure discovered thanks to new technology – that works like Covid vaccine – World News

Researchers at King’s College London have found a way to stimulate the production of healthy heart cells – which can then be delivered to muscle using the same technology used in the Moderna and Pfizer Covid vaccines

Covid vaccine technology allows scientists to regenerate damaged hearts – and could lead the way to a cure for heart attacks.

Researchers at King’s College London have identified genetic codes that create specific proteins that stimulate the body to create healthy heart cells.

Using the same technology found in Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, the healthy cells can be delivered to the heart muscle Daily Star reports.

The study also found that paramedics can inject these proteins into patients having a heart attack to prevent heart cell death Times reports.

Dubbed the “blockbuster drug,” the technology could be tested on humans within the next two years.

Around 100,000 people are hospitalized in the UK each year after a heart attack.

Because the heart is unable to repair itself, heart attack victims are often left with a scar that can lead to heart failure – but the new therapy could potentially transform cardiovascular medicine and prevent heart failure in victims.

Professor Mauro Giacca, who is leading the research, said: ‘We are all born with a certain number of muscle cells in our heart and they are exactly the same ones we will die with.

“After a heart attack, the heart no longer has the capacity to repair itself.

“The regeneration of a damaged human heart was a dream until a few years ago, which can now become a reality.

“We use exactly the same technology as the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to inject microRNAs into the heart, reach surviving heart cells, and force them to multiply.

“The new cells would replace the dead ones and instead of forming a scar, the patient has new muscle tissue.

“We have identified three proteins that stop heart cells from dying by stimulating them to repair themselves.

“The idea is to make these proteins in such a way that they can be injected immediately after a heart attack in the back of an ambulance or when the patient arrives at the hospital.

“If the clinical trials go well, it would be a blockbuster medicine. The treatment revolution that has taken place in cancer in recent years, where there is immunotherapy and targeted biological therapies, has not happened for the heart. The treatment of heart attack and heart failure remains very similar to 50 years ago.”

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani of the British Heart Foundation said: “The money raised through the TCS London Marathon 2022 will enable Professor Giacca and his team to push the frontiers of science by finding ways to teach the heart to repair itself . Unraveling these mysteries could help heal hearts.”
