Local media reported that two people in the helicopter were taken to hospital.
They are believed to be in stable condition.
Police have cordoned off part of the beach while an investigation is underway and the Federal Aviation Administration will launch its own investigation.
Miami Beach Police tweeted: “This afternoon at 1.10pm MBPD received a call about a helicopter crash over the ocean near 10th Street.
“Police and @MiamiBeachFire responded to the scene along with several partner agencies.
“Two occupants were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
“The beach area from 9 to 11 Street is currently closed. The FAA is responding to the scene.
“There were three passengers on the plane. Two were transported to the hospital.”
It is not yet clear what caused the crash or whether the helicopter was a commercial or public aircraft.
Hero viewers on jet skis are said to have powered up the crash site to help those injured on the helicopter, arriving seconds after impact, while boats arrive location soon after.
Shocked viewers took to Twitter to respond to the video.
One person wrote: “It’s a bit close to the public but in that moment the pilot just thought what he could do to survive.
“Plunging into the water is smart and no lives are saved, which is good news for a change.” [sic]
Another wrote: “Had seen this firsthand, it is surreal.”
Another Twitter user speculated: “He might have engine trouble and got as far away from the crowd as he could. When he ran out of the elevator.. he dropped it in the water… far enough away. people and still in the water shallow enough for manual rescue/restore. I think he did a spectacular job…if that’s the case!” [sic]
