Heartwarming letters for Peter O’Sullivan on life support

Letters of support have been received for an Albion legend who is on life support in hospital.

Peter O’Sullivan, an Albion winger in his 70s, collapsed last week and was hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage.

He remained in a high dependency ward at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but showed small signs of progress.

Asking its readers to send in words of support for O’Sullivan, the Argus was inundated with dozens of letters and more than 60 emails.

A particularly touching letter from Richard Inverarity of Brunswick Road, Hove, described his first time seeing O’Sullivan play.

“My very first football game was on October 2, 1976 when someone gave me a South Stand ticket at the Goldstone Ground,” he said.

“It was a draw against Crystal Palace.

“From that day I was hooked on Albion and still attend games as a season ticket holder – now at the age of 68.

“I loved watching you play and watching the rest of my home games from the North Stand. I used to travel to away games on the £5 Seagull Special trains.”

Richard said his season ticket is now for the East Stand at the Amex and he doesn’t miss a game.

“I don’t think my back would last about 90 minutes in the North Stand these days,” he said.

“Thank you for all the joy and happiness you brought me watching you play.”

Argus sports reporter Brian Owen said the number of letters shows the huge impact O’Sullivan has had on Albion fans.

“It’s fantastic to see such a great response from fans to a popular player of his time. It shows how popular he still is and how many great memories people still have of him,” Brian said.

“If someone wants to keep messaging me, I’ll forward it. I’ve also received about 50 emails which I will forward – they are all very welcome.

“He was a big star on one of Albion’s biggest teams. A fantastic entertainer.”

Peter left for America in 1980 to play for the San Diego Sockers but later returned to England. In 1984 he retired.
