Heidelberg Shooting – Students fight for life & 3 injured after gunman opens fire on uni before shooting himself

A GUNMAN has been shot dead after injuring several people when he opened fire in a lecture hall in Germany.
The shooting happened in the university town of Heidelberg and one of the four injured is said to be fighting for their lives.
Mannheim police said the horrific incident took place just before 2pm local time.
They said the man, who was carrying what they described as “a long gun”, was acting alone.
He burst into the lecture hall at Heidelberg University and then made his own gun, Bild’s report.
Investigators said he had no political or religious motives, the newspaper added.
The DPA news agency said he was a student and carried several rifles with him.
After opening fire, the gunman then fled the scene and his body was later found.
Reinforcements have been sent to the scene and a major operation is underway in the southwestern German town.
In an initial statement, Mannheim police said: “The deployment was on a large scale. Many people were injured.

“Police and lifeguards with a strong force are on the spot. A single perpetrator has wounded many people in the lecture hall with a long gun.”
The force then added: “The killer himself is dead. Colleagues are still at the scene with a strong force – we will provide more information here.”
The incident took place at Neuenheimer Feld, home to the natural sciences departments and parts of the university hospital of the University of Heidelberg.
This university is one of the most famous in Germany.
Heidelberg is a picturesque university town in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which has a population of about 160,000.
In recent years, Germany has suffered a series of attacks, mainly by jihadists or far-right fighters.
However, school shootings are relatively rare in Germany, which has some of the strictest gun laws in Europe.
In 2009, a former student killed 9 students, 3 teachers and 3 passersby in Winnenden, also in Baden-Wuerttemberg before killing himself.
In 2002, a 19-year-old former student, apparently in revenge for being expelled, shot down 12 teachers and two students at a school in Erfurt.
Then he also committed suicide.
