HelloFresh announces Bay Area plant closure and layoffs for 600 workers

Meal prep kit company HelloFresh said it aims to shut down operations at a huge Bay Area manufacturing facility in late 2022, with more than 600 employees expected to be laid off.

Demand from the Berlin company, long considered the industry leader, has shrunk in recent months. In its half-year financial report, the company reports earnings per share that are 25% lower than in the previous year.

The company sent an Oct. 10 letter to the California Department of Employment Development announcing its decision to close the 109,594-square-foot warehouse on Dec. 11. The closure will result in the layoff of 611 employees, including production workers, managers and maintenance personnel.

Under the California WARN Act, the company was required to provide 60 days’ notice to its employees.

The company’s lease was due to expire in early 2023, and HelloFresh decided against extending it after a “comprehensive analysis” of its manufacturing network, a spokesman told the San Francisco Chronicle.

HelloFresh will have its earnings call on November 1st.
