Here’s a highway you’ll love driving – and you won’t even be tempted to accelerate

DRIVERS will love driving this highway for a very happy reason.

The highway in Hungary “plays” a traditional folk song to cars – but only if you’re driving along it at the perfect speed.

The friction between carefully placed stripes on the road and car tires plays the tune as you drive through at exactly 80 km/h (50 mph).

As you drive faster or slower, the melody becomes imperfect or distorted – an ingenious trick to promote safer driving.

The tune of well-known Hungarian rock band Republic blasts down the highway to cars observing the speed limit.

Video footage of the street, opened in 2019, has gone viral multiple times.

Popular Instagram account @thearchbishopofbanterbury shared a video of the road, calling it a “very interesting concept”.

The road runs through the famous wine region of Tokaj in Hungary and appropriately sings of the Hungarian folk song “Érik a szőlő”, which translates to “The grapes are getting ripe”.

It is Hungary’s first music street and was built two years ago.

However, it’s not the only way to encourage drivers to cruise through the song at the right speed.

A section of Route 66 from Albuquerque, New Mexico plays America the Beautiful when you’re driving at exactly 45 miles per hour.

There are about 30 similar streets across Japan that play traditional melodies from Japanese culture.

Known as Melody Roads, they feature music from a system of grooves dug into the road and vibrations created by vehicles driving over them.

Fans of the street have taken to social media to share their joy.

The viewers reacted quickly – and opinions are divided.

“Hungary is waiting for you,” one replied, encouraging friends to try the clever idea.

Mark Humes added, “This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time.”

But user @donroze_2 wasn’t so sure. They asked, “What if you don’t like the song?”

Another quipped: “This is super annoying.”

A third added: “What if I want to hear the quick version?”
