Here’s my simple solution to the “chaos and confusion” at Dublin Airport, says an economist

Passengers have been urged to use regional airports instead of Dublin Airport to end the queue chaos.

The Limerick Chamber said urgent action was needed as Dublin Airport’s monopoly “falls far short of international norms”.

The organization is appealing to the Department of Transportation to force the DAA to partner with regional airports.

Managing Director of limerick Chamberlain Dee Ryan said: “Dublin Airport’s woes are not good for passengers, for Dublin Airport or for our reputation as leisure or business tourism.

“One obvious solution here is to use the free capacities at airports in other regions.

“If Dublin Airport does not do this then the Department for Transport should step in and force it to start talks with Shannon, corkKnock and Kerry to utilize their spare capacity.”

The Limerick woman said there needed to be a full review of aviation policy.

She said: “The rest of the country had problems traveling to Dublin for flights for decades, so it’s not inconceivable that the opposite would also happen.”

Ryan pointed out that there are other international airports that handle twice the number of passengers in his largest city.

She said: “Dublin Airport’s monopoly falls short of international norms.

“If you look at Germany, for example, the fifth largest city, Frankfurt, has the country’s busiest airport with more than twice the traffic of the capital and largest city. Berlin.”

Dublin Airport has warned it could take passengers three and a half hours to get through baggage and security, plus an additional 30 minutes if a car is parked.

However, she also advised morning passengers flying from 8.30 a.m. not to arrive at the terminals before 5 a.m.

Ms Ryan added: “What we are seeing now with the chaos and confusion in Dublin Airport was almost predictable.

“Indeed, we had warned that absent political intervention, Dublin Airport’s monopoly on the aviation market would deepen in the COVID.

“But there wasn’t and the pace of growth in Dublin in the recovery is so fast that it has its crisis.”

Meanwhile, Irish holidaymakers Travel Masks are no longer required to be worn on planes or other public transportation to the United States.
