Hero Doctor fined £100 for parking after staying late at work to save a patient’s life

A doctor who ran the night shift for helping a choking patient has been given a £100 parking fine.

Malinga Ratwatte says he was less than 10 minutes late to his car at the end of his 12-hour shift.

When he got back from vacation, he was incredulous when he saw the fine notice in the mail. He said: “I was dealing with a patient who had a threat to his respiratory system.

“She had a traumatic event that caused her throat to swell. That’s why I had to stay longer.

“Even with general private parking lots, there’s usually playtime.”

dr Ratwatte, who trained as a GP in North London, also does nights out at three London hospitals and asked us not to name the trusts involved.

He said bosses offered to help him appeal – after his story went viral on social media.

To add insult to injury, the first was followed by another £100 fine for a similarly minor delay.

The Department for Health and Social Care said free hospital parking was made available to NHS workers at the height of the pandemic, which ended on March 31. It added: “Free parking for night shift workers will continue.”
