He’s a big influence: Brendan Rogers welcomes Jamie Vardy’s return to fitness

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers knows his side are better when Jamie Vardy is around.

The 35-year-old showed the Foxes what they’ve been missing during his two-month injury layoff when he scored and assisted in the 2-0 win at Burnley in midweek.

It was his first appearance of 2022 after a hamstring injury and Rodgers, who described him as one of the “great strikers in the Premier League”, said he was ready to face Leeds on Saturday.

“Whether or not he lasts the whole game remains to be seen,” Rodgers said. “But it’s fresh. We missed that movement and that energy, that cuteness in the game.

“He’s a big influence. He’s one of the Premier League’s great forwards. It makes you a better team. When you have Jamie on your team, you are clearly in a much better moment in terms of your confidence and leadership skills.

“He influenced the game (at Burnley). It continues a much better performance from us as a team. We went into the game aggressively, played our football and scored two nice goals.

“He’s a natural goalscorer. He’s working on his game. He’s very smart. He studies the game. He’s very smart, he picks things up in his game.

“He’s sharp, he’s got a bright mind. He’s looking for ways to get in. It has a nice soft finish if need be.

“He has undoubtedly been one of the best in the world in recent years. He works tirelessly on his game and has the hunger to always prove something.”

The Foxes welcome Leeds to the King Power Stadium on Saturday lunchtime as the Yorkshire club begins life after Marcelo Bielsa.

Bielsa was sacked on Sunday after a 4-0 defeat by Tottenham and replaced by American Jesse Marsch.

Rodgers insists his side will still be well prepared.

“No, I don’t think there’s going to be too much we don’t know,” he said. “It takes time to implement your ideas.

“You will be in good physical condition. They have talented players and some very good British players who formed the basis of their success.

“It’s getting more traditional. Jesse himself said there will be more zonal pressure. There is now so much footage that you have a good idea of how they will work. He will want to impose his own signature on the team.”

Rodgers also paid tribute to the outgoing Bielsa, adding: “Marcelo is a huge loss to the Premier League as are the human qualities he has shown.

“It’s a huge loss to the city, he was a father figure. He was admired there and by managers. I spent some time with him while he was here.

“The game is a circus now, but it has brought old-school values with it. He wasn’t into everything that revolves around the modern game. That’s how football used to be. He will be a loss.”
