He also retweeted another account in which he falsely claimed that Kojima was a “far-left activist” named Samyuero Hydeo and the assassin of Abe.

He has since deleted the tweets and he apologized for the mistake.

As translated by GLHF:

“I naively took a joke for the truth. I didn’t think anyone would joke about killing a man but I should have checked before I shared.

“My apologies to Hideo Kojima and the Metal Gear fans.”

Unfortunately, the misinformation had already spread.

Despite having footage of the real suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, Greek news channel, Ant1 messagesfeatured stills of Kojima falsely claiming he was the killer.

A Reset to default The poster also shared an image said to have come from an Iranian news source that used images of Kojima alongside news about the assassination.

On July 9, Kojima’s studio, Kojima Productions, simultaneously released a statement on both English and Japanese Twitter accounts.

Neither statement makes specific reference to articles sharing Kojima’s image related to the assassination.

Both, however, condemn “fake news and rumors conveying false information”.

The second line of the Japanese statement refers only to the “regrettable consequences” of such acts that violate the “dignity of the individual.”

While this could refer to Kojima, it’s more of a comment expressing how disrespectful these rumors are to the memory of the former prime minister.

The English statement is harsher when it comes to the impact on outlets spreading fake news.

Rather than just expressing regret, the tweet reads, “We do not tolerate such defamation and will consider taking legal action in some cases.”

The statement does not identify any person or entity that is the subject of the lawsuit or whether Kojima Productions will pursue its deliberations.

Yamagami was arrested at the scene in Nara with a homemade shotgun.

He has since confessed to the crime.
