Highly cautioned drivers face a £1,000 fine if they forget to check important details on their licence

DRIVERS have been warned they face a £1,000 fine if they forget to check a crucial detail on their driving licence.

Around 926,000 drivers in the UK have expired driving licenses as of September 2022, statistics from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) show.

Some of these Brits will not be able to renew their licenses because they all stopped driving together.

However, they face a £1,000 fine if they fail to return their expired licenses to the DVLA.

And if you continue driving, you have to renew your photo card driver’s license every ten years.

People over 70 must renew their driver’s license every three years.

Expiry dates are set out in section 4b on the face of the cards.

If you are caught driving with an expired license you can also be fined £1,000.

Philips Gomm, a car expert at RAC, had this to say The Northern Echo: “There are good reasons to keep licenses up to date beyond the basic legal obligation.

“The renewal also offers people the opportunity to assess whether they are still fit to drive and we believe there is a case for linking a mandatory eye test to the process to ensure we all stay safe on the road, although the government should help to keep costs to motorists as low as possible.

A DVLA The spokesperson said: “We are advising customers to use GOV.UK as applying online is the quickest and cheapest way to renew their photocard driving licence. If you stop driving altogether, you should inform the DVLA and return your driver’s license rather than keep it as a form of an outdated photo ID.”
