Hit the track in a fast car and hit the gym for the feel-good factor


GO to the fast lane and not to the gym if you want to lift your spirits.

That’s according to a study by the Sports Science Laboratory at Loughborough University, England, and performance car brand Abarth, who conducted an experiment to see what positively affects a person’s mood.

Driving an Abarth around a racetrack elicited an average of 59 percent more happiness than working out at the gym, it found. Happiness levels were significantly higher (116pc) in the driving challenge compared to cardio activity. However, it was only 4pc higher than a weight training session.

We all know the positive emotional benefits of physical exercise, but the psychological effects of track driving aren’t as well documented.

The Circuit Training Mood Test also examined how riding on a hot lap affects enjoyment.

Sitting next to a professional driver was 77 percent more comfortable than a combined workout at the gym, it found.
