The creators of historical comedy musical Six say they are “so humbled and grateful” after the Broadway production was nominated for eight Tony Awards.
Oby Marlow and Lucy Moss, who wrote the globally hit show while they were at Cambridge University together, thanked the organization and gave “a big salute to the American accent”.
Six is a modern retelling of the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives presented as a pop concert.
The wives take turns telling their individual stories to find out who suffered the most under the tyrannical British king and should therefore become the group’s lead singer.
The Musical is nominated for Best New Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Orchestration at the 75th Tony Awards .
In a statement following the announcement, Marlow and Moss said: “Gosh this is so wild.
“We started Six as a fun summer project for us and our friends in 2017 because we thought that in the fall we’d get on with our lives and we’d love to be lawyers or accountants or something, so to get nominated for this show a literal Tony Award is right behind it.
“It’s a truly amazing, amazing honor to even be put in the same category as these other wonderful pieces. We are so humbled, grateful and handsome.”

They added, “We’d like to give kudos to the American accent.
“In our own accent … there’s absolutely no stress on the word ‘category,’ as it consistently does in the final number of our show, but having the opportunity to bring the show to Broadway really made that possible.” this text blossoms from a noticeably inferior text into a seemingly harmless rhyme.
“Well, thanks America.”
Six originally debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017 before being recorded and performed in London’s West End.
Official Broadway opening night took place on October 3, 2021 at the Brooks Atkinson Theater when Moss became the youngest director of a Broadway musical in four decades.
The Tony nominations precede three performances at Hampton Court Palace on 19th and 20th June 2022, which will reunite the original West End line-up of Queens.
The productions, staged in association with Historic Royal Palaces, will see the musical performed outdoors for the first time.
