FAMILIES plans a half-term break to a popular US destination that will have to rethink due to strict new vaccine regulations.
Some states, including New York, are requiring children under the age of 5 to get both vaccines.
However, children aged 5 to 11 are yet to be included in the UK rollout of the vaccine.
Even if they are given the first dose today, they still need to wait another eight weeks for the second dose – give this month’s half-term plans.
This compares with the US, which has immunized more than 5 million children aged 5 to 11 as of November 2021.
And since January 29, New York currently requires children in this age group to have both vaccines to enter indoor locations including restaurants and cafes, as well as tourist attractions.
The New York City website confirms: “Beginning January 29, 2022, children 5 to 11 years old must also present proof of complete immunization.”
This means that families looking to go away for a half-term break are unlikely to be able to do so.
Worried travelers took to social media, with one asking: “Booked New York tour from UK. All vaccinated except 8-year-old son.
“Just heard that children 5 years of age and older must be vaccinated in NYC to enter any indoor space. Is this the case? If so, our only option is to cancel it. ?”
“It’s a rule that cannot be met by European citizens.”
Another said: “I guess that would destroy a lot of people’s plans for half a term.
“You can get a very nasty surprise when you show up at the airport.”
Other states have also warned that they will soon introduce similar regulations, such as San Francisco, while Boston will require children 5-11 years old to have both jabs from May 1.
Current US entry rules only require Britons aged 18 and over to be fully vaccinated to enter,
States like Florida don’t enforce strict rules, so the holidays Disney World young tourists will not be affected.
There are still strict rules in place across Europe, with Spain now asking all people over 12 years old to come to be fully vaccinated.
Other countries have eased travel restrictions – we’ve rounded up 34 countries Britons can enter without any Covid test.
And UK is phasing out all Covid tests for Britons returning to the UK from 11 February.
