In response to the humanitarian crisis and the growing frustration of UK host families who have signed up for the Homes for Ukraine programme, a website has been set up to put UK host families in touch with Ukrainian refugees.
The non-profit and not-for-profit website – HomesforUkrainians.co.uk – was created to solve problems arising with the government program by a small group of technology entrepreneurs with considerable experience launching corporate websites, including Jaguar Land Rover and Honda.
The site was built in accordance with the highest security standards to be “hacker-proof” in the face of fears of Russian cyberattacks and fully translates between English and Ukrainian at the click of a button the government program for contacting refugees. It allows hosts to list their homes and quickly connect with refugees without requiring users to reveal personal contact details, removing complexities encountered elsewhere.
After the launch of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which allows Ukrainian nationals to come to the UK for up to three years, over 150,000 UK citizens have signed up to offer accommodation. However, applicants must apply on behalf of a designated Ukrainian national whom they will host. This has led to frustration, as hosts currently have no way of making their housing offer public or contacting refugees seeking protection.
Homesforukrainians.co.uk allows UK hosts to list their accommodation offer. Refugees search the site for suitable offers based on their needs and living conditions and can then send a message directly to the host and contact them securely. It is then the responsibility of the host and refugees to determine if they are suitable and apply for a visa.
Co-founder Hedley Aylott said: “We are connecting refugees with families within hours of going live. This website totally supports the government program and fills a missing link in the chain by enabling direct contact between host and refugee. We want to ensure that Ukrainians fleeing their country from this appalling humanitarian catastrophe are aware of the amazing support on offer in the UK from potential host families. We have to help more and faster.”
The initiative and website were brought to life by Yorkshire-based technology entrepreneur Hedley Aylott and veteran founder and CTO Zdenek Burda from the Czech Republic, both working in the digital media and e-commerce industries, together with a Ukrainian technology expert called has chosen to remain anonymous.
