A MURDER investigation has been launched after a woman in her twenties was fatally attacked along a canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly this afternoon.
The deadly attack happened around 4 p.m. today along the banks of the canal in Cappincur, Tullamore, Co. Offaly.
The woman’s body is still at the scene.
The site is being maintained by the gardai and will be left overnight.
A man in his 40s was arrested in connection with the incident and is currently being held at Tullamore Garda station.
An incident room has been established at Tullamore Garda Station under the direction of the Senior Investigative Officer.
A family liaison officer has also been appointed and is in contact with the families of the deceased.
The State Pathologist’s Office and the Garda Technical Office were notified.

Local councilor Declan Harvey, who uses the canal as his regular exercise route, said: “During the pandemic, it kept us all healthy because there was somewhere to walk. beside the canal, it’s so peaceful and pleasant on a sunny day like today.
“I don’t know how well it will be used after today’s tragedy, how many people will use it, how people will feel on it, I don’t know.
“I’ll be scared when my wife goes down there on her own now.
“I want to send my condolences to the family, I just can’t be worried. As this happened on a bright, sunny Wednesday night at 4 o’clock. I’m surprised this place wasn’t full of people. people.
“It’s heartbreaking for the whole family and for the people of Tullamore. It’s shocking, all the neighbors around me are in shock, some of them panicking when they take their kids down there for a walk.
“God help the family it’s unbelievable that the poor girl was out for a run and the family had to receive this news tonight, so heartbreaking.”
Attorney General Helen McEntee said: “My thoughts tonight are with the family of the young woman killed in a truly shocking crime, with her friends and with her community.
“Please anyone with information, come see An Garda Síochána. Gardai will investigate this terrible crime and ensure justice is done.”
A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí is investigating a fatal attack on a woman that occurred around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, along the banks of a canal in Cappincur, Tullamore, County Offaly.
“The body of a woman (20 years old) is still at the scene. The site is being preserved and will be preserved overnight.
“A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with this incident and he is currently being held at Tullamore Garda station in accordance with Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
“The State Pathologist’s Office and the Garda Department of Engineering have been notified.
“An incident room has been established at Tullamore Garda Station under the direction of the Senior Coroner. A family liaison officer has been assigned and is in contact with the family of the deceased.
“Gardaí urges any person with any information about this deadly assault to continue. In particular, Gardaí urges any person in the walkable Cappincur/Canal area of Tullamore, County Offaly by 4 hrs. this afternoon Wednesday, January 12, 2022, to contact them.
