Honors after the tragic death of a student (21) suffering from an allergic reaction

Tribute was paid to a Queen’s University student who fell ill with a severe allergic reaction.

uba (Jakub) Bednarz, originally from Poland, passed away earlier this week.

The 21-year-old had been fighting for his life at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast since March 25.

He went into cardiac arrest related to a severe allergic reaction.

His former school described him as a “hardworking, determined and conscientious” student.

Jakub has lived in Northern Ireland since he was two years old.

He grew up in Omagh, Co Tyrone, where he attended Christ the King Primary School and Christian Brothers’ Grammar School (CBS).

Before falling ill, he had studied music at Queen’s University.

In recent weeks, friends of the young man had helped raise more than £27,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to pay for specialist treatment in Poland.

Unfortunately, Jakub lost his fight for life on Wednesday.

His funeral will take place on Sunday.

His mother Beata Wilewska-Bednarz wrote on social media: “It is with great sadness and sadness that we have to announce that our son’s life machine has been withdrawn (on Wednesday) and Jakub has passed away.”

His school, Omagh CBS, also ran a tribute.

It says: “It is with great sadness that we learned today of the death of Jakub Bednarz.

“Jakub was a much loved and well respected student at Christian Brothers’ Grammar School between September 2012 and June 2019 when he left to study Music and Audio Production at Queen’s University Belfast.

“He was a hardworking, determined, and conscientious student with an infectious and engaging warmth that made him extremely popular with his classmates and staff alike. He was sincere, good-natured, and always generous with his time, volunteering at many school events during those seven years.

“As a school community, we pray for the rest of Jakub’s soul and extend our deepest sympathy to Jakub’s family at this very difficult time.

“His gentle and humble manner will ensure that he will always be remembered with great fondness and affection by all of us who knew him.”

Jakub’s funeral will be at 1.30pm on Sunday at Christ the King Church in Strathroy, Co Tyrone.
