Tributes have been paid to the family of a three-year-old boy who died in a tragic accident in Co Limerick on Friday.
The boy, known locally as Padraig Cunningham, is believed to have been fatally injured when he was hit by a vehicle at around 10.30am on Friday morning at a private home in the Ballyduhig area of West Limerick.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, desperately trying to save the boy’s life, but he was later pronounced dead at Limerick University Hospital.
A post-mortem will be carried out by a local pathologist and the matter referred to the Limerick Coroner’s Office for investigation.
Killeedy vicar Fr. John Keating said the community was deeply shocked after the tragic accident.
“There is a cloud over the place, they are a nice family. They are a very caring, very gentle family and very devoted to their children,” he said.
“They are very involved in the community and I think it really went against the grain for something like this to happen.
“The community has experienced many tragedies, the people are very resilient. The rest of the community will keep them going and lifting them up again.”
Father Keating said the people of Ashford and Raheenagh are a very close-knit community.
He added, “You would go a long way to find a closer group of people.”
Councilor Michael Collins, who knows the family very well, said it was a tragic incident.
“What can you say because it’s so personal to the family that there’s not much that can be said to comfort them or help them,” he said.
“It’s just so tragic for the poor family. The entire local community feels deeply for them and what they are going through.”
A Gardaí spokesman said: “Gardaí and emergency services visited the scene of an incident at private property in Broadford, Co Limerick this morning, Friday 22 July 2022.
“A 3-year-old child later died from his injuries. A family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family at this time.”
