Honors when Paudie Palmer, sports announcer and uncle to Claudine Keane, dies after a traffic accident
TRIBUTE was paid to Gaelic game commentator and uncle of Claudine Keane, Paudie Palmer, 65, who lost his ten-day battle to live after a road accident on Christmas Day.
r Palmer died at Cork University Hospital (CUH) on December 29 after being in critical condition following a road accident outside of Innishannon in West Cork.
A Ukrainian national has since appeared in Bandon District Court on four counts related to the incident, including one charge of hit and run.
Mr Palmer, a retired teacher, was a hugely popular broadcaster in Cork and known for his sports coverage on C103FM.
He is an uncle to Claudine Keane, a former model and wife of former Ireland international footballer Robbie Keane.
Claudine’s father, Denis, is a brother of Mr. Palmer.
Tánaiste Micheál Martin, an avid GAA fan, paid tribute personally to Mr Palmer when he said his loss was a huge blow to the Gaelic South West Games.
“Fans delighted in every word he said – he had a background steeped in Gaelic games and that showed in his commentary,” he said.
“He had an instinctive understanding of Gaelic games and commanded the respect of everyone involved not only in the GAA but throughout the world of Irish sport.”
“He had wonderful insights into the game and I would like to personally express my condolences to his wife Colette and his family.”
C103FM/96FM director Kieran McGeary said Mr Palmer’s death was a great loss to both the media and the sporting world.
“Paudie was a great character and a great member of the team here. He was extremely popular as a commentator. On behalf of all management and staff here I would like to express our condolences to his wife Colette and her family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Mr Palmer was originally from Templenoe in Kerry but has spent most of his broadcasting career in Cork, having also worked as a teacher in Bandon.
Paudie Palmer is also Claudine’s godfather.
Claudine asked people to pray for her uncle over Christmas in an emotional social media post.
The Keane family also suffered a bereavement over Christmas when Robbie’s grandmother, Bernadette Keane, died in Dublin.
The footballer’s mother, Anne, died in October after a brave battle with lung cancer.
Mr Keane hailed his late mother as “the rock of the family”.
A Ukrainian national has recently been remanded in custody in connection with charges stemming from the West Cork incident in which Mr Palmer was injured.
Bohdan Bezverkhyi, 33, appeared before a special session of the Bandon District Court.
Bezverkhyi, with an address at Rigsdale House, Rigsdale, Ballinhassig, Co Cork, appeared at 9.50am on 29 December at Bandon District Court charged in connection with the alleged hit and run incident at Dunkereen Cross outside Innishannon.
Bezverkhyi was accused of failing to provide assistance to the victim at the scene of the accident, failing to report the incident, failing to leave his vehicle at the scene of the accident for a reasonable period of time and failing to stop his vehicle.
Det Garda Manus O’Donnell told Judge James McNulty that Bezverkhyi was arrested at 2:52 p.m. on December 30.
The court was told that when the Ukrainian citizen was subsequently placed under a warning, he expressed remorse to officers for what had happened.
Det Garda O’Donnell said that Mr Bezverkhyi made various admissions at Bandon Garda Station.
“On the first charge he said, ‘I’m guilty – I want to apologize.’ (He then said) “I’m sorry, very sorry for what happened. I have no excuse I am very sorry for my actions.’”
Bezverkhyi was detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Defense attorney Myra Dineen said her client “expressed remorse” for what happened.
A translator assisted Bezverkhyi during the brief court session.
Ms. Dineen said her client had 12 years of professional experience in ventilation and air conditioning.
Judge McNulty granted free legal aid after the court heard the defendant was a man of limited means who was currently living in a rented apartment.
Gardai pointed out that the state refuses to bail in the matter.
