Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou expects only the best from Rangers

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou expects only the best from Rangers despite their European efforts.

ostecoglou warned about the dangMany believe they could have an advantage over their Scottish Cup semi-final opponents after the Light Blues were brought into extra time by Braga on Thursday night.

Rangers eventually reached the Europa League semi-finals and Postecoglou warned they could be at their best in Hampden tomorrow. Postecoglou, whose side beat St Johnstone 7-0 in their last encounter last Saturday, said: “If you fall into the trap of looking for an advantage or a weakness, that’s where the pitfalls lie. We expect to play every opponent at their best. We don’t think we’re going to go out there on Sunday and because Rangers had a big game (on Thursday) they’ll be a little less than they can be

“We’re going to go out there and prepare for them to be as good as we can, like we do in every game against them or any opponent, to be fair. That means we’re preparing to do our best.

“They will of course be pretty buoyed after their result and could play their best game of the year against us on Sunday. If we are not willing to do this, we will pay a price. We’ll be ready for a strong opponent and that means we’ll be ready to play our best game of the year there too.”

The former Australia head coach admits his team benefited from the free midweek after being eliminated from Europe by Bodo/Glimt in February – they have since won six games in a row.

But he believes strengthening his squad in January was key to maintaining the form that has seen them sit six points clear of Rangers in Scotland Premiership.

“There won’t be a coach or manager or player who doesn’t appreciate having time and training with their players,” he said.

“Especially when you have a new group of players, it definitely helps if you can emphasize our parts of the game more.

“For the first three quarters of the season we had midweek games, which limits your ability to work on certain things.

“So we tried to make maximum use of this last period of not having midweek games. That doesn’t mean we don’t work as hard. We probably work harder than usual in training, especially on our game. But a big reason why we’re in good shape is that we have a really healthy squad.

“January was an important month for us, there’s no doubt the four players we brought on helped tremendously in getting the players rotated, keeping the training intensity really high, keeping the guys really competitive, the Impact of the substitutions, not pushing back Dave Turnbull or Kyogo and other people who had injuries.

“I think they were the key factors in us playing our best football at the moment.”

Celtic are without Giorgos Giakoumakis, the Greek striker being sidelined against St Johnstone with a minor thigh injury.
