Hope Powell steps down as Brighton boss in WSL

They lost 8-0 at home to Tottenham in WSL yesterday and had a tough start to the season.

Powell said: “We’ve had a very challenging start to the new season with a lot of changes in our roster and results that haven’t gone as we all hoped.

“Sunday’s heavy home defeat by Tottenham was particularly disappointing.

“We’ve made great strides as a club over the last five years but I think now is the right time to step down and allow a new manager to take the team forward with lots of Super League football to play this season.”

Amy Merricks, supported by Alex Penny and Perry Northeast, will take over on an interim basis for Sunday’s WSL game at West Ham United, which will be followed by an international break.
