Forbidden Horizon in the West load so fast on the PS5’s SSD that developer Guerrilla Games actually had to intentionally slow them down to give players enough time to read the loading screen tool tips.
In a conversation with EngadgetMathijs de Jonge, game director for Forbidden West, talked about the insanely fast load times the PlayStation 5 can achieve, and how that compares to the Horizon Zero Dawn experience on PS4.
“In Horizon Zero Dawn, we call it a fast cruise, but it can take a minute to really load,” de Jonge said.
“With PS5, maybe four or five seconds, it loads so fast that the player can’t even read the hint.
“We had to add a very simple feature where it hangs on the loading screen for enough time that you can actually read at least one hint while it loads.”
If you’re playing Horizon Forbidden West on PS5, you’ll notice that you have to press X to move through the loading screen, so you definitely have plenty of time to read those gameplay tips. (Update: you can actually turn it off in the settings menu so the game loads instantly without pressing X. Just look for the option for ‘Screen standby’.)
Personally, I want the game to load immediately – loading screen gameplay tips are included to add something of value at a time when you can’t do anything else and mean it. meaning in an era where load times are much longer. If we could just continue the game we wouldn’t need those tips, especially since Horizon Forbidden West offers so many tips in the game.

This is not the first time a Sony studio has done this. Incredible, Ghost of Tsushima also slows down its loading time to enable reading of gameplay tips and that was running on an old PS4 mechanical hard drive.
