Forbidden Horizon in the West will release in a few weeks and before the game is coming PS4 and PS5 console, we’re starting to see first hands-on impressions of the game hit the internet. As expected, early impressions suggest that this is a game that goes above and beyond the scope of the 2017 original, demonstrating Guerrilla Games’ use of cutting-edge technology and improved platforming. The previous game was very well set up.
Each First hands-on preview from IGN, “more complex combat, freer exploration, and a more immersive, life-filled world” in Forbidden West than in Zero Dawn. One of the most eye-catching improvements the developer has made to the game, this time, is in the form of new and improved UI overlays as you climb.
By using Aloy’s Focus ping – which is close to the detective mode she can activate with R3 thanks to the fancy futuristic headset – you can clearly see the routes mapped out from the cliffs and similar obstacles, allowing you more freedom and clarity as you explore. This will take some of the guesswork out of trying to create your own shortcuts and prevent you from getting too lost on the map as you’re just trying to hunt down those last bloody collectibles.
We also heard more about the Pullcaster, “a fancy grappling hook that allows players to drag Aloy to harder or farther spots”. Halo Infinite, your grappling hook can eat its heart out. According to the preview, this can be used in conjunction with Shieldwing – a glider that Aloy gets in the game. Leaping from a cliff or vantage point, allowing Aloy to glide and use his skid coat onto a nearby ledge looks like the fluid and satisfying sideways we’ve been doing since world games. Open world in 2022, now everyone is adopting the Breath of Wild formula. Still, it’s all superbly done in Forbidden West – and the lovely Decima engine is very much appreciated for that.
Elsewhere, we see the game’s improved combat already illuminated. Focus is here again, where previewers note that it can now be used to scroll between each of the enemy robot’s detachable parts so you can see what can be damaged – and how. It’s a much faster process, much faster than we’ve seen before.
When it comes to your actual tools in combat, you have more options for how you can progress Aloy; there are now “six long skill trees” that you can take advantage of, especially since skins are now more closely linked to the skill tree you choose to pursue.
Aloy’s animations have also been overhauled, resulting in a more dynamic melee style that allows you to jump in and out of skirmishes, while enhancing powerful attacks by successfully landing enemies. the weaker one in quick succession. This will lead to faster, more enjoyable combat overall – if you can master dodge moves to keep momentum.
