A single-man yacht that went overboard off the coast of Columbia had to swim ten miles in the dark to get to safety.

The man, John Deer, lost everything he owned after “missing and falling overboard” from his 40-foot yacht, according to a fundraising page set up to help him.

Nearly ten miles offshore, Mr. Deer stepped helplessly onto the water as he watched his boat sail off into the distance.

The sailor’s friend and the person behind the fundraiser, Fou Ruesch, recalled the dramatic moments.

“At the time he was 9 nautical miles, about 17 km offshore, en route to a small anchorage near Border Town,” Ruesch wrote. “Knowing that if he panicked he would die, he swam to shore. It was 5 p.m. when it happened, so it was getting dark too.”

To make matters worse, the sailor found himself in an area of sea dubbed “Shark Corner” because of its high concentration of predatory fish.

Mr Deer said he “couldn’t say how long he swam” according to Ruesch but recalled “reaching a rock pile and must have passed out after arriving safely but completely exhausted”.

Unfortunately, all of his belongings were lost and his prized boat was discovered wrecked after colliding with the rocks and sinking.

Mr. Deer had sailed from Cartagena, Colombia to the San Blas Islands in Panama. The journey usually takes about 30 hours.

Ruesch continued: “The next morning he flagged down a local fishing boat who took him to the authorities and told his story. They found his boat, Julieta, washed up on the rocks, completely submerged. Sail up.

“Everything John owned was on that boat. What’s left are the shorts and shirt he was wearing when it happened.”

The fundraiser aims to help Mr Deer by raising the money to cover the cost of salvaging his beloved boat. The funds will also help the affected man “get his legal documents back and travel home to his family,” Ruesch added.

Ruesch said it was unclear how much the salvage operation would cost, but it could be in the “hundreds of thousands”.

They added: “At this point we have no idea what it will cost, but I know it doesn’t come cheap and penalties can run into the hundreds of thousands if you don’t rescue a sunken boat.”

“Let’s show John some support. Be aware that every single dollar, euro or Swiss franc will make a huge difference to John. He’s stranded in a foreign country with absolutely nothing left.”

The GoFundMe page can be accessed here.
