Do you have an underage daughter? Do you want her to marry King Viserys? You better line up because apparently, everyone in Westeros is just throwing their teenage girls at him! Half a year after the Queen’s death, social climbers are pondering how best to keep their place as the King begins his search for a new wife. The thought of remarrying did not concern Viserys, but his small council made it clear that mourning was less important than strengthening the line of succession.
Unfortunately, they have a point. Currently, Viserys has only one heir – his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock). If something were to happen to the king – like, I don’t know, a really bad infection from his many cuttings of the throne – they would indeed have to cede the throne to a woman (gasp). And what if something happened to her? Then Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) will be the only option. Both were controversial choices, making Viserys’ reign fragile. So naturally, the little panel has some hints as to who he should marry next so he can start having children as quickly as possible. And by small council I mean mainly Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint).
Securing the line of succession by selecting more heirs was one thing, but turning them into purebred Valyrians was another. House Targaryen and Velaryons were the last remaining houses of Old Valyrian blood, so Corlys had the bright idea of uniting them in marriage. When he first suggested this, I thought to myself – oh, great, he has a grown daughter we haven’t met yet. I bet she’s rock, can’t wait to meet her! Alas, that is too optimistic.
