Families who claim housing benefit the personal allowance will increase by 3.1% from April.

You can get housing benefit even if your income is higher, but this depends on your individual circumstances.

The maximum amount of housing benefit you can usually receive is called the “local housing benefit rate” and varies depending on where you live.

But just because the personal allowances change does not automatically mean that you will receive more housing benefit.

For example, if you receive housing benefit together with certain other benefits, you can see the amount that you can receive without taking the personal allowance into account.

This could include those who are also claiming universal credit because they are in temporary or assisted placement, or income support, means-tested ESA, means-tested JSA, or pension credit.

This is how the personal allowances will change on April 6th.

single person

  • Under 25s: Increase from £59.20 to £61.05
  • Any age and in the main phase ESA: increase from £74.70 to £77.00
  • Age 25 and under state pension age: increase from £74.70 to £77.00
  • Has reached retirement age: increase from £191.15 to £197.10

single parent

  • Under 18s: Increase from £59.20 to £61.05
  • Any age and in the main phase ESA: increase from £74.70 to £77.00
  • Aged 18 and state pension credit age: increase from £74.70 to £77.00
  • Has reached State Pension Age: Increase from £191.15 to £197.10

Pair

  • Both under 18: Increase from £89.45 to £92.20
  • One or both aged between 18 and State Pension Credit age: Increase from £117.40 to £121.05
  • All ages and in the main phase ESA: increase from £117.40 to £121.05
  • One or both have reached retirement age: increase from £286.05 to £294.90

Other

  • Dependent child/adolescent under 20: Increase from £68.60 to £70.80

Who is entitled to housing benefit?

To apply for housing benefit, you usually need to fall into one of the following categories.

It is available to private tenants as well as tenants in housing cooperatives or social housing.

For example, if you are a private renter, the amount you can claim depends on how many bedrooms you anticipate needing for your household.

You qualify if you:

  • You have a low income or claim other benefits
  • Be at least 16 years old – if you have been in foster care you must be at least 18 years old
  • Have less than £16,000 in savings or get the guaranteed part of the pension balance
