Hove woman raises £5,000 for godchild with cancer

A WOMAN has raised more than £5,000 by shaving her head to raise money for her godson who has been diagnosed with a second brain tumour.

Jude Jefcut, ten, was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the start of the Covid pandemic in 2020. He had gone for an eye test on his eighth birthday after suffering from a headache.

Jude and his mum Katie received the good news last year that he was cancer free after being treated at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

A further examination in April revealed that the tumor had returned.

His godmother Tracy Kennedy, 52, of Hove, is one of many people who have raised funds for specialist treatment Jude would have in Germany or Greece.

She has now raised more than £5,000 and had her head shaved for her ‘little warrior’.

She said: “I was a bit nervous, it was a bit of a realization that by the age of 52 I was going to be bald.

“But it was okay. My twin sister, my partner and my parents were there. We did a bucket collection.

“I then had to go straight into a Zoom meeting at work, they were a bit in shock. But it gave me a good opportunity to tell them and they also donated.

“I’m just getting used to the hair, I don’t have to blow dry it in the morning anymore. I ride a motorbike so it’s even easier to take my helmet off.”

Tracy had her head shaved by Simon Webster, owner of Simon Webster Hair in Gardner Street, Brighton.

There was also a raffle and the person who won a signed Manchester United football shirt gave it back to Jude, who lives in Milton Keynes but spends much of his summer in Arundel with his family.

Tracy added: “We’re just waiting for that biopsy to be sent. He’s awaiting trials at Marsden. He’s fine, had a great time with his cousins.

“I Facetimed him and he was shocked but I told him about the football shirt and he was happier than worrying about my hair.

“The family remains positive, which is something we must continue to do.”

The family are hoping to raise around £40,000 to cover all costs.
