How a V/H/S/99 Entry Gets Paid Homage To Phantasm [Exclusive]

“Suicide Bid” sees a college freshman named Lily (Ally Ioannides) looking to join the most infamous sorority on campus. The heads of Beta Sigma Eta guide their new commitment to her hanging ritual, requiring Lily to spend the night in a coffin. That was a lot of bad news, especially since the ritual was born out of an urban legend already associated with sorority.

Just before the Beta Sigma Eta girls guide commits to her claustrophobic nightmare, they take a quick stroll through a morgue. The decision to shoot a film was a request of Roberts as he wanted to pay tribute to Don Coscarelli’s 1979 dreamy chilling film “Phantasm”.

According to an exclusive interview with /Film’s Jack Grioux, Roberts mentioned that while shooting in Pasadena, he just had to include it. Roberts says:

“I’ve been there before and the mausoleum is actually there which makes me think, ‘Oh,’ Phantasm.” Gotta get it.'”

While the mausoleum doesn’t have flying silver spears, however, the California macabre site has its own slightly different version of the main villain from “Phantasm,” which Jacob Hall of /Film describes as “the one” strangest, wildest, and dumbest crown in jewel horror.”
