THE visit of Great Britain Prince Charles and his wife Camilla to Waterford and Tipperary are said to bring a multi-million euro tourism bonanza to the South East.
The royal couple will arrive in Ireland on Wednesday but have no public engagements until Thursday and Friday when they will tour various sites in Waterford and Tipperary.
A major security operation will be carried out for the visit, with British Guards working closely with officers from the Gardaí and Diplomatic Guard Corps.
Specific details of their visits to Waterford and Tipperary are being kept under wraps for security reasons.
However, the visits are understood to reflect the interests and passions of the Prince and Duchess of Cornwall, ranging from heritage, agriculture, gardens, architecture, equestrianism, arts, crafts and community development.
Waterford – which will host the bulk of the royal itinerary – hopes the visit will match the tourism boom Cashel and Cork have seen following the high-profile state visit of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 2011.
The Queen’s visit to the English Market in Cork City was so touristy that special arrangements had to be made to cope with the number of visitors for years to come.
Cork has also seen a massive surge in tourist numbers from the UK.
Reputed to be Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford has strong historical ties to previous British monarchs.
Major security inspections by the Garda Special Protection Team and members of the British Royal Security Force have been taking place in parts of the city of Waterford, Cashel and Cahir in recent weeks.
The Viking Triangle – a sensitively developed part of Waterford city center dating back to when the Vikings founded Waterford as Ireland’s first city – is said to be part of the royal tour, according to WLRFM.
The area offers a range of museums and is also close to Waterford Town Hall, the Cathedral of Waterford’s Church of Ireland and the new Waterford Crystal headquarters.
Other members of the royal family will embark on a series of worldwide tours Spring. Prince William and his wife Kate will visit Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
