How Dan Harmon handled his return to the community

In an interview with Mary Sue, Dan Harmon talked about returning to “Community” after taking such a long break from the characters. Luckily for Harmon, none of the show’s fundamentals have changed, making it easier for creators to return:

“It feels natural enough to come back. Season four doesn’t redefine so much that any kind of juggling act needs to happen creatively. Theoretically, Jeff has graduated, that’s it. a good thing, and Pierce left the show. So that’s just the thing we had to figure out.”

“Community” focuses on the fact that Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) needs to have a legal bachelor’s degree in order to continue his legal career. Season 4 finally wraps up that all-important story so it doesn’t feel like the characters are stuck in place or the show is dragging. Chevy Chase’s uneasy relationship with the cast and crew led to his departure, which needs to be explained on the show. While the fundamentals of “Community” haven’t changed, there are loose ends that Harmon will have to deal with when writing the first episode of season 5.
