Jamaica between Eritrea and Belgium. England after Latvia. Madagascar at the beginning and Morocco at the end.
What will the parade order of athletes at the opening ceremony be like?
The answer is that because the host country is China, the teams will enter the match based on the order in the Chinese language. It’s written with characters – think of them as small abstract pictures, each representing a word – that are not in alphabetical order.
Instead, Chinese characters are usually ranked in complexity, from those with the fewest strokes or the most lines to those with the most strokes.
So Australia, which can often be one of the first teams, will come almost last. And Ukraine and Uzbekistan, often also alphabetically, move in a straight line.
Under this system, the United States ranks 56th out of 90 marching teams.
There are a few exceptions to the order. Greece, the host of the ancient Olympics, always leads the parade. The host country, China, comes last. And in a new tradition, which began in Tokyo last year, future Olympic venues are also moved to the end of the parade. That means the 2026 Winter Olympics host country, Italy, will finish second to last, right ahead of the host country.
