Actress June Brown, who played the most beloved character Dot Cotton on EastEnders for more than three decades, has died aged 95.
Dot Cotton is a fan favorite and one of BBC magazine’s longest running characters, first appearing in the series in 1985, the year EastEnders was created.
She stayed until 1993, returning to play the same character from 1997 to 2020.
While Dot was only on Albert Square for a short time, June impressed fans of the show and became the first and only soap actor to do an entire episode on his own. in January 2008.
June remained a key figure on the show for 35 years until it was announced that she was leaving “on a good note” in February 2020.

On June’s 90th birthday, the BBC made a documentary dedicated to the soap power, entitled June Brown at 90: The Legend of Walford, the film got a behind-the-scenes look at the transition of June the Dot on set.
Speaking in the make-up trailer when her Dot red wig was removed to reveal the bleached white fringe underneath, June said in the documentary: “People ask me if I look like her. Dot doesn’t, but there’s not much horror in Dot. I do not think. ”
She continued: “I didn’t bring her home with me. I’m not one of those people. It’s a very, very amateurish approach. ”
The documentary also saw past and current members of June’s EastEnders pay tribute to the star and her iconic character.
Rudolph Walker, who plays Patrick Trueman on the BBC, said: “She’s a woman with a lot of experience. Reaching 90 on its own is an achievement. Being 90 and working in this industry is something remarkable. She is just a wonderful woman. “
Danny Dyer, who plays Mick Carter and is expected to leave the BBC, added: “I’ve worked with some very famous people over the years, some very powerful, some very actors. good and there’s just something about her where you go ‘oh’.”
Meanwhile, Gillian Taylforth of Kathy Beale famously said of Dot that June “created that character”, adding: “Everything you see is what June adds. All of that was like a cigarette and curls bouncing in her hair. That’s what she wanted.”
“She made Dot an icon,” added Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey Slater. “She made her from scratch and it’s unbelievable.”
