Amazingly, it seems I’ve spent more than 24 hours silently sobbing into successive glasses of sake as he explores the world of Ghostwire: Tokyo. However, my tears are not only from sadness, but also from joy. Because this game has an incredible ability. It’s able to pull me out of my current, hellish existence – surrounded by loved ones and craft breweries here in Sydney – and catapult me to the happiest place on earth – Japan.
Ghostwire: Tokyo has its weaknesses, but an inaccurate depiction of a modern Japanese metropolis isn’t one of them, so I spent a lot of time with the game looking for excuses to go to new areas on the map. I cleaned torii gates and rescued ghost clumps. So many lumps! I’ve made a small fortune in Meika, tracking down disguised tanukis and catching yokai – well, slouching after them. I’ve even pet more Shiba Inus than makes sense, secretly killed more schoolgirls than could possibly be sane, and did some pretty crazy boring side quests. Eventually, however, my wanderlust in Tokyo caught up with the gameplay reality and a reckoning was made. The short version is that I LOVE the veracity of this attitude, but very few of the things to actually do have caught my attention. So I reluctantly continued with the main story and said goodbye to the kingdom of dreams and madness. It’s been a sweet 24 hour love affair and I hope to see you soon – really – Tokyo my sweet prince.

It cost me quick 15 hours to complete Ghostwire: Tokyo. During that time, I managed to complete the story, tick off 15 side quests, and fully uncover the map by clearing every single torii gate in Shibuya. As you can imagine, there is still a lot for me to do on the streets of Tokyo; There are dozens of side quests that remain unsolved, a whole host of tanukis and yokai to find, and literally hundreds of spirits to absorb into paper dolls and transfer into phones.
Am I going to do this anyway? Probably not. Much like Cam, I love the city that developer Tango Gameworks created, but I have little affection for the activities that litter its authentic streets. I’m not really into collectible hunts, but unfortunately that’s a significant part of this game beyond the main story. I feel like 15 hours for my personal taste gave me exactly what I needed from Ghostwire: Tokyo; a digital weekend getaway to an amazingly realized Shibuya haunted by some of the most stylish ghosts I’ve ever seen.

When I rolled credits on Ghostwire Tokyo, my game time was up 16 hours, although it could have been much sooner if I hadn’t decided to pause my progression and return to side quests once the game presented the point of no return. I guess I probably could have completed the story in about 13 hours.
That being said, I felt like I was fed up with side quests and activities. I hadn’t erased the map by any means, but I did manage to clean all the torii gates and pray to a fair amount of jizo statues during my playthrough.
However, I’m an avid trophy hunter, so I couldn’t resist diving back in. I’m at 24 hours now I’m well on my way to dinging that precious platinum I suspect is only a few hours away But my god there’s a lot of ghosts to collect in this game!

I started Ghostwire: Tokyo the same way I start any open-world game: I almost refuse to advance the main story while there are side activities to do. Of course, this mentality only lasts for about the first half of the game before I decide to just follow through with the story until I finish the game. As the credits rolled my in-game timer said I was just over 18 hours.
To be honest, Ghostwire: Tokyo seems to be pretty on the short side when it comes to open-world gaming. If you weren’t interested in any of the side activities, I could theorize that you could probably finish the main story in 13-14 hours, but that’s mostly conjecture. And now that I’m done, I estimate it will take me around 5-6 hours to fully finish it. It’s hard to tell, the side quests are quick to complete, but I have no idea how difficult some of these collectibles are going to be to find. And as Dale mentioned, there’s a lot of spirits to collect. Like, SO MANY!
