How Marlon James, Novelist, Spends His Sundays

Author Marlon James Yes jokingly described His “Dark Star” fantasy trilogy is “Africa’s Game of Thrones”. “After the movie made its debut in 2019 with “Black Leopard, Red Wolf”, actor Michael B. Jordan famous in “Black Panther”, take up movie copyright. “Moon Witch, Spider King“The second book in the series, was published on Tuesday.

Mr. James, 51 years old, Jamaican, who won the Man Booker Prize in 2015, living in a two-bedroom apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He hates Sundays.

SLOW START CODE OMG, the moment I opened my eyes on Sunday, I closed them right away. It’s 6am and I’m still pulling the curtains. I read a lot when I’m sober. I have this light, it’s like having a flashlight tied to my neck, and I’m like a kid sneaking up on stories in bed. I’ve just finished novel “Pass”.

WONDERFUL I am one of those people who diligently make your bed every morning. Few things make me more depressed than sleeping in an unmade bed. I think it’s because I take sleep very seriously. What happens next is that I read Pitchfork Media Sunday Review, because it’s a review of an old record that might be the one I haven’t heard yet. The problem with the records they looked at was that they had no context other than their own greatness. It could be a Bollywood soundtrack or an album by Minnie Riperton. Part of my routine is usually Raw trade to buy records, but they have moved.

AGREE I get distracted and waste my time watching tearful YouTube videos about dog-soldier reunions, then I go looking for breakfast. Sunday is the only day I don’t cook my own breakfast. My partner, Nicholas Boggs, and I will go to Gertie, is a type of Jewish heritage diner. Sometimes I go to Egg shop on Eighth Street. They have the same thing as AEC, which is eggs and Cheddar cheese on a brioche roll that I mistakenly called AOC.

TURN ON CALLS When I get back here, I often have to deal with people who don’t respect my Sunday sanctity, like the TV show production team I work with called “Get Millie Black,” a detective show set in Great Britain and Jamaica. It’s produced by HBO and is expected to come out sometime around this time in 2023. When you’re a writer, there are no days off.

WORK BATTLE I don’t do creative work on Sundays, so I won’t write, but I can edit. If I’m serious about editing, I cycle to my office on Park Slope. Yep, you damn it that’s my heart. My office is in John Wray’s House. There could be four or five writers working there at any given time. We command his bedroom. At one point, there were two finalists for the National Book Award there, me and Susan Choi. Since when did she take over? Nathan Englander were there.

MANIC SUNDAY I don’t know how people find Sunday relaxing. The second is more relaxing. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always hated Sunday. When I was growing up, we didn’t have a TV and so you would have Sunday radio, it was church music that was turned on or stories about that and such people didn’t meet a brother. his for 20 years and trying to find him. When the Bracelet was born with “Terror Monday” where they talk about, “I wish it was Sunday, because it’s my happy day,” I thought, No. What are the girls talking about?

INSPIRED Usually I go to McNally Jackson. I always buy books. More than what I would read. I might as well go check out a new record store. I was admired by this artist L’Rain; people call her experimental, but it’s almost as if she’s taking the core elements of African R&B, electronics and sound, taking them apart and putting them back together. People who often say “I don’t like your weird stuff”, really like it.

JUST A FAN If I cooked dinner on Sunday it would be a corporate dinner, because cooking for one is weird and I grew up cooking for six. I will do something in Books by Yotam Ottolenghi. I have a whole directory of Ottolenghi dishes. They are influenced by the Mediterranean. I met him years ago and now he would think I was stalking him.

FINAL PAGE I usually go to bed around 11:30 to listen to music like Nick Drake or Brian Eno’s ambient. I am quite religious about it. I just want to slide into a pre-made bed.
