It’s spring clean season, but if you’re trying to muster enthusiasm to get stuck, you can easily invest in a device or two to help.
But with so many on the market, how do you know which ones are worth the investment and which ones will pay off on their own?
“We spend millions cleaning appliances that are destined to live a lonely life in the cupboard under the sink,” says Martyn James, consumer expert at Resolver.
“Before you buy, ask yourself how much it will cost you to purchase and source replacement parts, and in environmentally conscious times like these, how much waste will be generated. how much?”
Here, we try out some of the latest add-ons to see how well they work.

Housecleaning slippers
Dusenly Mop Slippers, £4.99, amazon.co.uk
These are more gimmicky than gizmo I think, but there’s something quite helpful in flipping through knowing you’re getting some chores done at the same time. They do a reasonable job, at least on the surface.
If you have any stains or spills, sprinkle some floor cleaner on the floor and discard. Work completed. They don’t take up much space in the closet. Even better, the kids love using them too. 6/10
Bed blitz
Vonhaus 350W Portable UV Bed Vacuum, £34.99, vonhaus.com
I didn’t expect great things from this but I was pleasantly surprised how much cleaner the bed looked after I used it. It uses UV light to kill bacteria and it can also remove bug and other young creatures that live in the mattress.
I have a dusty velvet sofa and it deserves it. But it could do with a longer cord for better access and quite large for storage. 6/10

Clean screen
Joseph Joseph EasyStore Compact Shower Faucet, £10, josephjoseph.com
I hate clutter, so I’m impressed with the sleek design of this slingshot. You barely notice it in the shower. It does a great job at keeping the shower curtain clean and stain-free. 7/10

Carpet
Vax Platinum SmartWash, £299.99, vax.co.uk
I love it. I’ve used it on carpets, rugs and doormats and it removed all stains, leaving everything as good as new.
It has dual brushes that automatically mix water and solution for cleaning, and it comes with hand tools for tough stains. It is quite noisy to use but light enough to carry up and down stairs.
You will need a large cupboard or utility area for storage as it is quite the monster. Well worth it if you have a lot of carpets and pets. 9/10

Microwave makeup
Microwave Madge Microwave Cleaner, £6.99, coopersofstortford.co.uk
I’m ashamed of how dirty my microwave is. It is well used and difficult to clean when we store it in the cupboard so it is difficult to take it out. The Microwave Madge did a surprisingly good job. You pour the vinegar and water mixture on her, put her inside, and leave the microwave on for eight minutes. The house smelled of vinegar for a while after that but the microwave was gone. 9/10

Super spray
Vileda 1-2 Spray Brush System, £26.99, vileda.co.uk
Just add water or cleaning solution to the tank and get the mop without carrying the bucket. It can be used on floor surfaces including lino, wood and vinyl.
I find it very easy to use. You whip around pretty quickly and it leaves the floor much cleaner. Also easier to store without buckets. 6/10

whiz window
Karcher Window WV Black Edition Window Vac, £49.99, karcher.com
I’ve never found a glass cleaner that keeps windows streak-free. So this is a game changer.
There are two handheld devices – one end you spray and wipe, then the other acts as an electric squeegee that sucks up water, leaving windows streak-free. It would take a long time to do with the spray and cloth, but I cleaned all my windows in half an hour.
I’m glad I found a place for it in my closet. 8/10
