In an interview with /Film’s BJ Colangelo, Phillips explained that his Herman is not at all like Fred Gwynne’s version of the character in that he comes “immediately.” They just made the guy by Dr. Wolfgang,” Phillips said. So he’s trying to figure it all out. His brain is trying to get this whole body moving. I use this analogy, it’s like his brain used to drive a Ford Fiesta, and now he’s in a GTO, and he’s just trying to make it all work. “
In other words, Phillips’ Herman is a work in progress, no different than a kid going through puberty:
“He’s very cocky. He’s almost like a teenager. That’s how I approached it and opened my eyes wide. What is Fred Gwynne like, he has this charm and yes, he is very young too. con, but I’m just trying to get someone to try to figure out their voice. And that’s why his voice will break out and get a little higher.”
While Phillips admits he’s not an impressionist, longtime fans may remember that he learned how to convey Herman’s signature laugh. Will he also go on a rampage like Gwynne’s big, sly paw? We will find out soon!
