How to Escape from New York has found the perfect spot for the city’s dystopian version

Because of its recognizable image, New York City is an easy target for all kinds of cinematic disasters. From King Kong climbing the Empire State Building to the Man Who Stayed Puft Marshmallow crushing a Central Park church in “Ghostbusters,” it seems no district is safe from Hollywood. When John Carpenter decided to turn an entire city into a prison, why not Manhattan?

After making a name for himself with the horror films “Halloween” and “The Fog”, Carpenter switched the genre with the sci-fi action film “Escape From New York”. In the film, criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is encouraged to venture into the lawless prison city of Manhattan Island to rescue the president after a plane crash by Air Force One.

Carpenter said to It comes from that he got the idea for the movie years earlier while watching “Death Wish”. He say:

“New York was having some big, huge problems at the time, I was thinking bankruptcy and a crime problem. And this Charles Bronson movie, ‘Death Wishes,’ came out. and he’s a wary architect, about everything, and something about the movie moved me…. I was reading a story by Harry Harrison, there’s this planet, where the harshest, most evil person in the universe So who would you choose to go in there and do something with a certain mission The most evil person in the universe That idea stuck with me, and I thought to writing this kind of freaky futuristic story about New York as a prison and a guy who has to get in to rescue the president.”

But with a meager $6 million budget, building realistic settings in New York City was not an option. Instead, Carpenter looked to another city that had faced its own catastrophe.
