According to experts from WEEE, around 5.3 billion smartphones will be thrown away this year.

They say most of them end up in drawers, closets, or just tossed in the trash, even though they contain many valuable components.

Smartphones contain pieces of gold, copper, silver and palladium, all of which are easily recyclable.

So if you have an old device lying around, think twice before throwing it away as there are several ways you can get some money back.

“As a nation of hoarders, millions of tech-savvy Brits will be contributing to the growing e-waste problem without realizing it,” said Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com.

“To reduce e-waste, consider spring cleaning and making sure unused tech is either reused, resold, or disposed of sustainably.

“If you change your handset, you should choose a refurbished model.

This saves you money and at the same time reduces the e-waste that is generated when buying a new smartphone.”
