How to take part, simple tips for vital organ health

World Heart Day, celebrated every September 29th, draws our attention to a vital organ in our body – our heart. It’s the perfect time for people to take better care of their heart health.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is thought to account for half of all noncommunicable disease (NCD) deaths and is the “world’s leading cause of death,” according to the World Heart Federation, the organization that started this observation.

On this day, people around the world are encouraged to take action to protect their heart health and that of those around them.

“Through this campaign, the World Heart Federation is uniting people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against cardiovascular burden and inspiring and advancing international action to promote heart-healthy lives around the world,” said the World Heart Foundation. “We and our members believe in a world where heart health is a fundamental human right for all and a critical element of global health justice.”

People can participate in this year’s event in a variety of ways. Activities for the event include creating a poster to share on social media or in your own communities, listening to this 61-song World Heart Day Spotify playlist, or taking part in the World Heart Day Challenge to walk, bike, or run in heart shape around their communities.

“No matter what distance you walk, every step counts for your heart health,” the organization noted. “We want to see as many hearts in as many cities as possible by September 29, 2022. Whether alone or in a group, create your heart shape and share it with others.”

Of course, one of the best ways to observe the day is to begin by taking steps to look after your heart and the hearts of those around us. It may seem like a daunting task at first, but there are actually many simple things we can do every day to maintain or improve our heart health.

This includes choosing a healthier diet and opting for more vegetables and fruits over those high in sugar and saturated fat, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. Likewise, it is best to choose water over sugary drinks and limit alcohol consumption.

Monitoring and controlling your own blood pressure is also useful for a heart-healthy lifestyle. There are many safe blood pressure monitors available today that people can use, the CDC said. Finding ways to manage stress, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight are also key factors in heart health. It’s also best to quit smoking or, for non-smokers, avoid secondhand smoke. Taking medication as directed by your doctor is also essential.
