How your car’s AIR CONDITIONING could land you a £5,000 fine this summer

SUMMER is upon us but motorists are being warned the hot weather could see them fined £5,000.

Rule 237 of the Road Traffic Act stipulates what must be observed when driving in summer.

Part of Rule 237 states that drivers must keep their cars “well ventilated” to avoid drowsiness.

It also warns that motorists should be aware that the road surface can become soft or slippery when it rains after a dry spell.

These conditions can affect your steering and braking.

Failure to comply with these guidelines and therefore lack proper control of the vehicle can result in a fine of £5,000 in the most serious cases.

These instances include endangering another motorist or pedestrian, or causing an accident. This means a subpoena and possibly a driving ban in addition to the fine.

According to the government: “Many of the rules of the Code are prescribed by law and if you disregard these rules you are committing a criminal offence.

“You can be fined, penalized points on your license or banned from driving. In the most serious cases, you can go to jail.”

Motorists have also been warned about bright sunlight during the summer months.

If the sun shines in your eyes and you take your eyes off the road momentarily, a police officer could claim that you were ‘driving carelessly’.

Under the same Rule 237 of the Highway Code, drivers must slow down or stop if they are “blinded by bright sunlight”.

So if a motorist disregards the Highway Code by not stopping when blinded by sunlight, the police have the right to charge you with negligent driving.
