A provider of hormone replacement therapy is ramping up production to alleviate shortages in the UK.
Estrogel maker Besins Healthcare has now acquired an additional factory and ordered more production shifts to meet demand.
Estrogel is one of the most difficult menopause treatments for women in the UK to access as prescription numbers soar.
Besins also said it had “significantly increased” shipments to the UK to ease current shortages through June.
The French company is the only supplier of estrogel, which millions of people are prescribed by the NHS every year to relieve menopause symptoms.
Rising demand means pharmacies are struggling to get supplies to all the women who want them, forcing many to buy them privately or on the “black market.”
Activist Jane Pangbourne of the advice site Menopausal Not Mad said: “This is a short-term victory, it’s not the end.
“There are other bottlenecks due to the knock-on effect of women not getting the gel.
“And the demand will only increase.”
