Huge blow to Apple as the company is forced to switch to a new universal charger by fall 2024

APPLE was forced to ditch its Lightning connector and move to a universal charger by fall 2024, the EU ruled today.

According to the new European Union regulation, USB Type-C is set to become the common charging port for all mobile phones in the EU.

The ruling also applies to 15 other types of small to medium electronic devices, including tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld video game consoles and e-readers.

Laptops will also have to comply with the judgment later.

The legislation has been in development for over a decade and is a “broader EU effort to make products in the EU more sustainable, reduce e-waste and make consumers’ lives easier”.

The European Parliament claims that the new obligations will lead to greater reuse of chargers, which could save up to €250m a year in “unnecessary charger purchases” and save an estimated over 11,000 tonnes of e-waste.

Parliament’s rapporteur, Alex Agius Saliba, said: “Today we made the common charger a reality in Europe.

“European consumers have long been frustrated by the fact that multiple chargers pile up with each new device.

“Now they can use a single charger for all their portable electronics.”

For years, USB Type-C has been considered by many to be the current standard for charging and transferring data.

Despite this, Apple has been fighting legislation to mandate its use since it was developed, and released its proprietary “Lightning” charger in 2012.

The trillion-dollar tech giant remains one of the few major smartphone makers not adopting universal charging technologies.

They have argued that mandating a single charging port for all devices will stifle innovation and create more e-waste, which it will save as millions of Apple users ditch their redundant Lightning-based chargers and accessories.

However, Apple has been using USC Type-C connectors on its Mac and iPad lines since 2017.

USB Type-C is also superior to Apple’s Lightning connector in almost every respect.

“PROTECT CONSUMERS”

It supports higher wattage/currents for faster charging and transfers data at over 80x the speed of the Apple equivalent.

If Apple doesn’t comply with the new laws, they will no longer be allowed to trade in the lucrative European market.

Regarding Apple’s protest against the legislation, reporter Alex made it clear that the legislation was not specifically aimed at Apple, but was a broader movement in the name of consumer convenience and applied to a wide range of companies and products.

He said: “This is the standard to protect consumers, protect their health and safety and protect the environment.

“Not only does Apple have to abide by these rules, it applies hundreds of companies and 15 product categories targeting our markets.

“It’s not just for smartphones and it’s not a law that’s only aimed at Apple. That is an important point.”
