PROFESSOR Brian Cox has shared his take on why we haven’t encountered aliens yet.
The British television scientist said yesterday that Earth may be “the only place” in the cosmos that is home to an intelligent civilisation.
While alien microbes may well be common on other worlds, the physicist believes that “things like us are extremely rare.”
Speaking on BBC One on Sunday morning, Prof Cox, 49, described the potential existence of extraterrestrials as “one of the great mysteries”.
He was answering a question regarding the rare public hearing on UFOs held by the US Congress last week.
“If you were to make me guess, I’d say microbes could be anywhere,” said the former D:Ream pop star. “That’s why we’re looking for life on Mars, for example.
“But in terms of intelligence…the origin of life on Earth, it looks like we have good evidence that life existed 3.8 billion years ago and the first civilization to appear on Earth roughly now was, give or take.
“So it took almost four billion years to go from the origin of life on Earth to a civilization.
“That’s a third of the age of the universe, and that’s a long time.
Prof Cox added that he believes the greatest risk to humanity’s future is a “lack of perspective”.
He said, “The idea that we might be the only civilization for thousands or even millions of light-years away… is useful on many levels.
“One of the things it’s very useful for is giving us perspective.
“I don’t think many of us think… it’s possible that this is the only significant island in a galaxy with 400 billion suns. This is important.
“I don’t think it’s any weird idea. It might focus the mind.”
It’s been a couple of weeks for alien enthusiasts.
On May 17, a Navy intelligence official revealed that there have now been over 400 confirmed sightings of UFOs.
The unidentified aerial phenomenon – dubbed UAPs by the Pentagon – has appeared within sight of military aircraft on numerous occasions.
US Congressman Andre Carson called it “a potential national security threat” that is “real” and “needs to be investigated.”
UFO videos were played to congressmen at the hearing, the first held on UFOs in decades.
One showed a fast-moving spherical object, while another showed what appeared to be a triangular shape glowing green in the sky.
Experts have no explanation for these objects or the way they move.
Some believe it is top-secret military technology deployed by China or Russia, while others think it is extraterrestrial.
