A power outage has swept across parts of Russia after a massive explosion at a power plant.

A fire broke out at the Gysinoozerskaya hydroelectric power station for unknown reasons.

A huge column of smoke rose from the power plant in the Buryatia region.

An eyewitness said: “There was an explosion at Gusinoozerskaya HPP.

“First there was a bang, and then the sound reached (us) and there was a loud bang.”

He spoke of a sound “like an airplane taking off”.

The regional capital Ulan-Ude remained without electricity.

So does Krasnokamensk in the Trans-Baikal region, home to the Priargunskoe Chemical Plant – Russia’s largest uranium mining company.

It was initially unclear if the facility itself was affected by the outage, but power and cellular connections were down in the city.

The incident is the latest at major Russian plants and facilities during the war in Ukraine.

It’s unclear if there’s a connection, but sabotage has been speculated.

Gusinoozerskaya’s press service said that “spontaneous damage to the transformer” occurred, which led to the shutdown of all operating power plant units.

“Restoration work is currently underway,” the statement said.

“In the coming hours, the operation of the power plant units in both power plants is expected to be restored.

“There were no injuries in the incident.”
