Huge free iPhone upgrade revealed all sports fans – how to find it – will love The Irish Sun

APPLE is releasing an amazing upgrade for millions of iPhone models – and sports fans are going to love it.

It’s part of a huge new iOS update that’s likely just weeks away.

Your iPhone will soon be able to show live sports scores on the lock screen

Back in September, Apple introduced iOS 16, which gives users the ability to massively customize their iPhone lock screens.

This included the ability to add widgets to the lock screen for the first time.

And in the upcoming iOS 16.1 upgrade, Apple is adding a brand new widget type.

They are called live activities and they provide real-time information about ongoing events.

The big advantage of this is that live sports scores can be viewed right on your home screen.

Live Activities works on any iPhone that can be updated to iOS 16.1.

For example, you could set up an NFL widget to show you the latest American football scores.

Of course, live activities are not limited to sporting events.

“Live Activity is a new feature that helps users keep track of things happening in real-time, such as: Like a sports game, workout, rideshare, or ordering food delivery, right from the lock screen,” Apple explained.

That means you can also track how far your food delivery is from your address or how you’re doing with sports.

These live activity widgets are temporary and appear at the bottom of your iPhone lock screen – unlike the current widgets, which remain at the top of the display.

We’re expecting iOS 16 to land in October, but you can try customizing your lock screen now.

How to add widgets to iPhone lock screen

  1. Touch and hold the lock screen until the Customize button appears, then tap Customize.
  2. Tap the box above or below the time to see the widgets you can add to your lock screen.
  3. Tap or drag the widgets you want to add.
  4. Tap Done.

Unfortunately, not all iPhone models can get iOS 16 and therefore won’t get iOS 16.1 and the sports widgets either.

Models supported by iOS 16

Apple can’t support all iPhones forever – so very old iPhone models often lose access to updates.

Sometimes these old iPhones aren’t capable of supporting new features, or not enough people are using them to justify deploying an update.

Now the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 and 1st generation iPhone SE are being cut off by Apple.

These handsets were compatible with 15.6.1 but will not receive iOS 16.

If you’re using older iPhones, you’re already cut off, so consider upgrading to a newer model right away.

Here is the full list of devices supported by iOS 16:

  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14Plus
  • iPhone 14 pro
  • iPhone 14 pro max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro max
  • iphone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 pro
  • iPhone 12 pro max
  • iphone 11
  • iPhone 11 pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8plus
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)

If you can’t get the latest iOS, you’ll lose access to the latest security fixes.

These are critical patches that close vulnerabilities used by hackers to gain access to your systems.

So using a very old iPhone that cannot be updated could put you at risk.

If you can’t update to iOS 16, you’d better update your iPhone sooner rather than later.
