ALEX Dunne, has prepared for its 2022 European Motorsport season with impressive, confident, challenging form for the United Arab Emirates Formula 4 Championship.
During January and February, the sixteen-year-old Irish star made huge progress as he secured his first two auto race victories.
And establish yourself as a consistent runner in a championship that features top young riders from around the world.
Young Driver of the Year at Motorsport Ireland traveled to the UAE in early January to meet with his new team, the Hitech GP.
Here he got acquainted with the brand new Formula 4 car introduced in 2022.
With new tracks to learn and the entire championship condensed into five consecutive weekends, Harris Group and Motorsport Ireland have backed the new driver who has a big challenge ahead of him.
With limited testing available, the opening race weekend was used to try out a variety of different setups on unfamiliar cars.
But this did not hold Alex as he had just missed the podium when he finished in fourth place in race one at the Yas Marina Grand Prix Circuit.
Two more tops were achieved in the remaining three races to complete a solid opening weekend.
Moving to the Dubai Autodrome for the second round, the team continued to gather data on the new car by trying out a variety of settings, resulting in a streak of ten best finishes.
Staying at the Dubai Autodrome for the third round, Alex’s results from the first three races of the event did not reflect the progress being made, but he put it right into the final race of the weekend.
Starting Thursday, the only Irish driver in the field showed his true potential for the first time when he led comfortably towards the end of the first round.
An incident behind him yielded red flags and while Dunne followed the rules and returned to the net, every other driver on the field advanced to the pit lane.
The actions of the other drivers led to a strange situation where Alex would start the race as the only car on the grid.
But with so many cars coming out of the pit, it was decided to restart the race behind as a safety car and add a five-second penalty for the entire course, excluding Alex.
After the restart, Hitech’s car once again took the lead and separated from the field, differing only from one of his competitors.
With the team informing him of his advantage, the young Irish driver allowed his opponent to pass, rather than rush into a fight and then maintain the distance at under 5 seconds to win his first Car Racing.
With work on the car development underway, Dunne is at his best in the last two laps.
In round 4, he qualified in the front two rows in both sessions and then went on to add another podium finish to his record, before entering the final weekend of the tournament. Season.
Returning to Yas Marina for the first time since lap one, Alex ran in the lead throughout the weekend to an impressive second race of the year in race number three alongside fastest lap.
With the front section of the net reversed for the final race, Alex’s win put him in 11th but he made an impression once again as he coldly picked his opponents to finish the title. champion with the fourth podium.
Speaking on his return home from the UAE, Alex expressed satisfaction with the way things have turned out. . I learned a lot about working with a team of Hitech caliber and developing a car. For all my efforts to get my first Car Racing win was phenomenal. In the end, I got two wins, twice went up to the podium and placed fifth on the leaderboard, while competing with the best young talent in the world. I have to thank Hitech for the opportunity to race in the UAE and all of my sponsors, Harris Group, Motorsport Ireland, VTL, Reynolds Logistics, Artisan and PDS without them and the support of their parents. me, I won’t be online. ”
Dunne will go on to challenge Formula 4 in 2022 in Europe. Details of his 2022 show are still being finalized and will be announced in the coming weeks.
