WHATSAPP improves the way you secure chats, but it could cost you if you’re not careful.
The messaging app is developing a way to export your backed up chats and data from Google Drive.
Such a change should make it easier to switch smartphones.
But acc WABetaInfothe service is also planning an option to re-import the same backup to Google Drive.
It comes after reports surfaced earlier this year that Google Drive’s unlimited storage space for backups could soon be running out.
Google Drive currently offers 15 GB of cloud storage space for free.
WhatsApp on Android is not one of them for the time being.
Apple users have iCloud as a backup, which is already limited by the storage tier you choose.
Of course, when – and if – the changes happen, you won’t be billed without asking – you’ll have to set it up first, but it’s worth mentioning nonetheless.
It is believed that Google Drive will continue to offer a certain quota of free storage space for WhatsApp backups.
“Thanks to this option, users will finally have more control over their backups on Google Drive in the future,” says WABetaInfo.
“We don’t know why WhatsApp is developing a similar feature, whether it’s because of the changes above, or the exported backup might be imported to WhatsApp for iOS later.”
The leaked screenshot is from an early beta test, so nothing is confirmed at the moment.
We’ll have to wait and see if it comes true in a future update.
